2025 updated:free/ freemium AI Writer compare:Jasper, Copy AI, Writesonic, Rytr, Smart Copy
1. Jasper: Pricey, but It Delivers
My impression of Jasper comes from when my previous company paid for it. Personally, I really could not afford it.
When this unicorn product first came out, my previous company bought a trial. I used it to generate landing page copy. If English is not your native language, and your writing is not faster or better than AI, then for English content generation, I can only say that Jasper’s output is completely trustworthy.
Why?
Because my previous company’s product was extremely niche. How niche? Have you heard of tower cranes?
It is something you might not even see once in your lifetime in Taiwan. XD
This kind of product is not part of common sense. The material AI can learn from mainly comes from information crawled from the internet. Yet Jasper was able to generate copy that was very accurate and not awkward at all. It felt like it had gathered and organized a lot of information from the web, rather than simply stacking subject, verb, and object into sentences.
And that was only when it had just launched. It should probably be even stronger now. I highly recommend it to users who need precise copywriting for niche products.
I think Jasper should pay me.
2. Copy AI: Free Usage Quota and Scenario-Based Templates
Pros: The free version can generate social media post templates, and it offers many scenario-based options.
Cons: The free version can only generate blog outlines and introductions. To generate a full blog post, you need to pay.
Overall, it is decent. The paid plan is quite expensive and allows up to five users, so it is not very suitable for individual use. My favorite part is that the social media post templates offer different scenarios to choose from. After selecting a scenario, the tool guides you to fill in the relevant information, making it very intuitive to use.
3. Writesonic: The Only One I Do Not Recommend
Simply put, I do not recommend it. Its text output has three quality types, which may seem cost-effective, but the cheapest option is almost unusable and feels a bit like a money trap. In addition, most AI tools allow you to adjust the tone, but Writesonic does not. If you choose “economy” for English output, it is basically just paraphrasing. As for the Chinese content it generates, it is almost unreadable.
In terms of the interface, its sidebar has a huge number of templates to choose from, but most of them feel very similar. There are also labels like V2 and V3, which make everything look messy. I would boldly guess that their AI mainly depends on the scenario you choose to decide what tone to use. This has both advantages and disadvantages, but personally, I do not like using a tool that gives me decision fatigue.
4. Best for Short Copy and Marketing Scenarios: Rytr
Pros: It offers a free quota and supports many marketing scenarios, such as Call to Action, Keyword Generator, SMS Push, and more.
Cons: It cannot generate long-form articles. It only provides blog ideas and blog outlines. I am not sure whether this can be improved through custom use cases after upgrading.
Having a call-to-action generator is not surprising, but I was pleasantly surprised to see AIDA and PAS copywriting frameworks included.
I also really like Rytr’s clean and simple UI design. Unless you are writing product descriptions or ads, you usually do not need to fill in too much information. You can generate content by simply providing keywords. You can even adjust the tone and creativity level at the same time.
It gives you a free monthly quota. If you only produce a small amount of text and do not rely heavily on AI, you can happily be a freeloader. XD
Even if you decide to pay, it costs USD 9 per month, which is about the same as Netflix. It is still very affordable.
5. Smart Copy: Suitable for Long-Form Content Generation
What makes this AI tool different from others is that you first need to enter your product or company information, target audience, and details about your product or service before entering the writing screen. You can modify this information later.
Overall, the AI creates different projects based on the information you provide and fine-tunes the generated content accordingly. The free version only allows one project.
The quality of its long-form content generation is quite good. I gave it the title “The Impact of Rate Changes on the Economy and Your Wallet,” and it produced the following content.
Smart Copy also has flexible pricing. The free plan allows 40 uses per month, with 10 credits refreshed every week.
Even with the free plan, if you run out of credits, you can purchase additional uses as a one-time payment. One thing to note is that every time you click “generate,” it counts as one credit. Therefore, I recommend generating a large amount of content at once. Using it for short copy or synonym searches is not very cost-effective.
Pros: Built-in Grammarly, convenient paraphrase function, and flexible payment options.
Cons: Even if you pay for the Essential plan, there are still usage limits. It is not suitable for people who rely heavily on AI.
6. Simplified: A Four-in-One AI Tool
Simplified positions itself as a four-in-one AI tool. In addition to an AI writer, it also includes social media scheduling, image design, and video tools.
I tried its AI image generation feature, but honestly, it was not very good. Maybe my prompting was wrong. XD
Since I am not a designer, I can only comment on the text generation part. Personally, I think it is fairly average.
First of all, I think its long-form content quality is not as good as Smart Copy. Below is the prompt I used.
Below is the generated result. I would say it is more like a short piece.
Smart Copy, on the other hand, only needs a title, content type, and target audience to write a full article. Of course, to complete a full article, you still need to generate content three to four times.
Although Simplified is a free tool, it still has word count limits. For people who often need to write long-form content, I would recommend Smart Copy instead.
But if you need both text and image tools, I still think Simplified is pretty good overall. You can choose templates based on different writing needs, such as shortening a paragraph, expanding a paragraph, or using “Explain a concept to my three-year-old,” which is actually very practical.
That said, for content creators, if you pay the monthly fee but do not use the image-related features, it does feel a little wasteful. XD
Pros: Combines text and image features, with a free usage quota.
Cons: Cannot generate high-quality long-form content. After the free plan, the next tier is the USD 21 team plan.
Conclusion: Most AI tools require payment if you want to generate long-form content. From an individual rather than team perspective, I recommend Smart Copy for people who need to write blog articles. I recommend Rytr for people who do not need long-form writing but have various marketing copy needs. I recommend Simplified for self-media creators or marketing teams that want an all-in-one tool.
If you or your team has a generous budget, going straight for Jasper is also a solid choice.
